MorningStar Farms does a nice job with their Grillers line. The Prime is a little heartier than the regular Grillers burger.
The Grillers Prime looks like a burger you would expect from a fast food restaurant – McDonalds or Burger King.
The prime gets pretty close to a true fast food burger texture. And that’s what it’s trying to be. It has some texture and is not smooth on top. The texture holds up nicely in most cooking situations – they are great on the grill or sauteed. And in a pinch, they come out of the microwave in OK shape. Although overcooking in the microwave will turn them hard and inedible, so be careful.
If you are looking for a frozen veggie burger that gets you close to the true meat taste, the Prime does a nice job of that. It’s a bit salty and has a “meaty” flavor as opposed to tasting like a more traditional veggie burger. Dress it up with lettuce, tomato and cheese and you could almost fool a meat eater.
Unfortunately, this is wear the Grillers Prime loses it’s edge. The protein and calorie levels are good, but it’s loaded with a huge blast of sodium. A wopping 360mg. And it’s this very reason we can’t make the Grillers Prime an Editor’s Choice.
A great alternative is the original Grillers, which cuts about 100mg of sodium out of the mix and doesn’t give up too much flavor in exchange.
